Surprising Maine Coon Traits Every New Cat Owner Should Know

If you're new to the world of Maine Coons or considering adopting one, you're in for a treat. These gentle giants are full of personality and surprises! As a Maine Coon mom to Floppa, I've come to learn their quirks firsthand — and it’s part of what makes them so magical.

Here are 5 surprising facts you probably didn’t know about Maine Coons:

1. They Chirp, Not Meow

That’s right — Maine Coons are known for their adorable vocalizations, but they don’t typically “meow” like other cats. Instead, they chirp, trill, and make sweet cooing sounds, especially when they’re excited or watching birds. Floppa chirps at everything from window squirrels to her dinner bowl.

2. They Love Water

Most cats avoid water like the plague, but Maine Coons are the exception. Floppa loves sitting by the shower, dipping her paw in her water fountain, and even watching the tap run. Their water-resistant coat makes them more curious (and tolerant) around water than your average feline.

3. They Act Like Dogs

You’ll often hear Maine Coons described as "dog-like," and it's true. Floppa follows me from room to room, waits outside the bathroom, and always wants to be where the people are. They're loyal, attentive, and love being part of the action.

4. They Grow Until Age 3–4

While most cats are fully grown by 1 year old, Maine Coons take their time. These big beauties can continue growing until they’re 3 to 4 years old. Floppa turned 1 recently, and I can already tell she’s nowhere near done!

Their growth includes size and personality development — they become more social, expressive, and confident over time.

5. They’re Highly Emotionally Aware

Maine Coons are incredibly sensitive to energy. They respond to your tone, your moods, and are often drawn to comfort kids or pets who need calmness. Floppa has a way of knowing exactly when to come sit beside me during stressful moments.

This emotional awareness makes them amazing family pets — gentle with children and accepting of other animals.

Final Thoughts:

Living with a Maine Coon is like having a fluffy, soulful roommate who’s always in tune with your energy. Whether you’re already a cat parent or thinking of becoming one, I hope these fun facts give you insight into why Maine Coons are such beloved companions.
